Creative Generations
Creative Generation is an initiative of Education Queensland that seeks to provide Queensland students from Prep to Year 12 with an amazing opportunity to work alongside with students state-wide; in a high-quality performance incorporating performance arts areas: song, dance, music/ instrumental and drama. Creative Generation (or CGen) is not a competition, but rather a collaboration of the performing arts. Albany Creek first submitted a self-nominated dance team in 2019 and has participated each year since. Our students work closely with Primary and High School students from many other schools around Queensland to learn, rehearse, polish and perform their items. This high-quality performance opportunity is a very valuable experience for the children involved; with professional lighting, choreography, staging, filming and directing crews in the industry to enhance the production. Using filming from the shows, Channel 10 later broadcasts a shorter version of the show, which is another highlight for the children.
Book Week
Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia. It was first established in 1945. Each year along with many libraries in Australia we spend this week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. At our school we work towards Book Week by reading and discussing some of the Short-listed books which have been chosen by the Children’s Book Council of Australia as being the best books published during the previous year. We then wait in anticipation for the announcement of the ‘Book of the Year Awards’ for each of the categories.
Our Book Week celebrations usually include creative and colourful library displays constructed by teachers and students around the Book Week theme, an Author or Story-teller visit and competitions related to the theme. There are also activities for students during the lunch break in the library presented by special guests and a most interesting and colourful parade where students and teachers dress up as their favourite book character.

Brisbane North District Mathematics Tournament
Each year Albany Creek prepares a team of Year 6 students to participate in the Brisbane North District Mathematics Tournament.
Most years there can be as many fifty teams from surrounding schools eager to demonstrate their mathematical prowess. In Term Three each year our team of diligent students work hard to prepare for the event. The tournament requires the students to work cooperatively to solve a number of challenging mathematical problems.
Our teachers, parents and caregivers are extremely proud of the students’ achievements and their levels of cooperation.
Dance Club
Students in Year 5 and 6 are invited to join the Dance Club, with rehearsals held once a week during lunchtimes. The team learn a dance each term to perform on Assembly or at other special events. The Dance Club use a mix of genres and songs, with students given opportunity to participate in the choreography process for most dances.
Speaking competition
The Albany Creek State School speaking competition has a long and proud history. It was introduced in 1976 by the Principal of the day, Mr Ivan Stegman, who enlisted the help of two talented Toastmistresses, Mrs Jill Muir and Mrs Helen Robertson to help develop the program and encourage and train the speakers for the inaugural event.
The competition is a highlight of our cultural calendar and is open to students from Years 4, 5 and 6. To reach the final, each student presents their speech to their class as part of their program of learning within their classroom and later participates in a year level semi-final. From the semi-final, five year level finalists are chosen to represent their grade on competition night.
The Year 4, 5 and 6 students prepare a speech on a topic or subject of their choice that has duration of 2 to 4 minutes.
Our final is held each year in Grayson Hall on the fourth Wednesday night in term 4. The date will be advertised in the Creek Weekly. The judges for the night are recruited from local speaking clubs, the Albany Creek High School and talented speakers within our community.
Many of our past finalists have achieved successful careers that have utilised many of the talents and skills displayed on competition night. One such finalist, Dr Tim Trudgian, went on to attend Oxford University and is now lecturing as a postdoctoral research fellow in Canada.
